Karura Forest walk: Gate A to Gate F

Updated 5 November 2026

Karura Forest is a large urban forest on the northern edge of Nairobi, with shaded trails, streams, a waterfall and caves. It is one of the city's favourite places to walk, run and cycle, and a short escape from traffic.

How long is it from Gate A to Gate F?

Our Gate A to Gate F route is about 5.8 km with roughly 82 m of climbing. It is an easy walk of one to two hours, or a gentle run. The forest has many marked trails, so you can make the outing as short or as long as you like.

What the walk is like

The paths are wide and mostly flat, winding under tall trees with streams running through the valleys. The waterfall and the caves are popular stops, and the forest is busy with walkers, runners and families at weekends.

Tips

  • Go early in the morning for cool air and quieter paths.
  • Wear shoes that can handle mud after rain.
  • Pick up a trail map at the gate and check the current entry arrangements.

A Nairobi walk on your wall

Karura makes a calm, detailed map, with the forest and streams in relief and your route raised in colour. It suits a regular running loop or a favourite weekend walk.
