Hiking guide
Mt Longonot hike: the crater rim loop explained
Mt Longonot is a dormant volcano rising above the Rift Valley floor near Lake Naivasha, about two hours from Nairobi. The hike climbs to the crater rim and then circles the whole crater, with a forest growing inside it far below.
How long is the Longonot hike?
The full route, up to the rim and around the crater, is about 10.5 km with roughly 919 m of climbing on our map. Most hikers take four to six hours. You can also walk up to the rim and back without doing the full loop, which is much shorter.
How hard is it?
The climb to the rim is steep and dusty, on loose volcanic soil. The loop around the crater rises and falls sharply, and the highest point on the far side is the hardest part. It is a good challenge for regular hikers, and beginners manage it with a slow pace and plenty of rest.
Planning your day
- Start early: there is little shade, and the afternoon sun is strong.
- Carry more water than you expect to need, plus snacks.
- Wear shoes with good grip for the loose, steep sections.
- Check the current park entry arrangements before you go.
Keep the climb
Longonot is one of the most striking shapes we print: the crater stands out in 3D, with the rim loop raised in colour. Add the date and the names of everyone who made it round.
