Ngong Hills hike: distance, climbing and what to expect

Updated 5 November 2026

The Ngong Hills rise just south-west of Nairobi in Kajiado County, a ridge of rounded peaks with views over the Rift Valley on one side and the city on the other. The traverse along the top is one of the most popular day hikes from Nairobi.

How long is the Ngong Hills traverse?

The ridge walk along the main peaks is about 8.7 km one way, with roughly 341 m of climbing on our map. Most people take three to five hours, depending on pace and how long they stop for the views. Because it is a one-way route, plan how you will get back to your starting point.

What the hike is like

The path follows the crest of the hills, rising and dropping over a series of peaks. It is short but steep in places, and the grass can be slippery after rain. Large wind turbines line part of the ridge, and on a clear day you can see far across the Rift Valley floor.

Planning your day

  • Start early: mornings are cooler and the views are clearer.
  • Hike with a group or a guide, and check current entry and ranger arrangements before you go.
  • Carry water, sun protection and a light jacket: the ridge is exposed and windy.
  • Wear shoes with good grip for the steep, grassy descents.

Turn the hike into a keepsake

The Ngong Hills traverse makes a striking 3D map: the ridge stands out clearly in relief, with your route raised along the top. Add the date and the names of everyone who walked it, or upload your own GPX if you took a different line.
