Drakensberg Amphitheatre hike: Chain Ladders to Tugela Falls
The Amphitheatre is a curved basalt wall almost 5 km wide in the northern Drakensberg, rising to over 3,000 m. This hike climbs onto the top of it from the Sentinel Peak Car Park by the Chain Ladders, and ends where the Tugela River drops off the edge as Tugela Falls, falling 948 m in five drops.
Section by section
- Sentinel Peak Car Park: the hike starts at about 2,500 m. Pay the hiking fee and sign the hiking register before you set off.
- Below Sentinel Peak: the path heads south, then zigzags up towards the basalt of Sentinel Peak, which stands at 3,165 m at the western end of the wall. A short detour leads to a viewpoint about 40 minutes from the car park.
- The contour path: the trail follows the base of the Amphitheatre wall, with a few short exposed sections and a small four-step ladder.
- The fork: after about an hour and 40 minutes, the path splits. Right leads to the Chain Ladders. Left goes up Kloof Gully, a steep, boulder-filled scramble that adds about half an hour each way and about 100 m of climbing.
- The Chain Ladders: two parallel steel ladders bolted to the near-vertical rock, each in two flights of about 37 m. The right-hand ladder has protective hoops; the left one is open. Both reach the same place.
- The plateau and the falls: from the top of the ladders at about 2,987 m, a short steep rise leads to a cairn, then about 25 minutes east across the flat top to the edge where the Tugela runs off the cliff. The path up here is faint in places.
Terrain and how hard it is
No technical climbing is needed, but the route is exposed, high and at the mercy of the weather. You need reasonable fitness and a steady nerve for the ladders, which sit close to the rock and can sway slightly. The rest of the walk is fairly easy.
Witsieshoek gives the full return hike as 12.4 km with about 472 m of climbing, taking around six hours. On our map the line from the Sentinel car park to the top of the falls covers about 6.2 km one way.
Best time of year
March to May is the best time: the summer rains have eased, temperatures are comfortable and the hills are still green. September to November is also good, though after the dry winter the falls may have little or no water.
From December to February, afternoon thunderstorms can be torrential and make the ladders and gully slippery, so start early and be back by early afternoon. From June to August the top is very cold.
What to bring
- Warm clothing and, above all, a waterproof jacket: storms build fast.
- Shoes with good grip for the scrambling and the ladders.
- Enough water and food for the day.
- A charged phone with an offline map, for the faint path on the plateau and in case of mist.
Getting there, entry and fees
The Sentinel Peak Car Park is reached through Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State, on the R57, about four hours from Johannesburg or Durban. Ignore any GPS route through Royal Natal National Park: that road does not exist. You enter through a toll gate, and the last stretch from Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge to the car park needs a 4x4; the lodge runs a shuttle.
The Sentinel Peak Trail is run from Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge, a community-owned lodge managed by Transfrontier Parks Destinations. For March 2026 to February 2027 it lists a conservation fee of R90 per adult and R50 per child under 12, paid at the toll gate if you arrive by vehicle, and a day hiking fee of R145 per person, paid at the car park. Overnight on the mountain is R145 per person per night. A guide is not required; guides can be booked through Thaba Adventures at the lodge. Opening hours are not published on the site. Keep the hike
We print the route on the real terrain, so the Amphitheatre wall stands out in 3D with your path raised in colour up the ladders and across the top. Add the date and the names of everyone who made it to the falls.
