The course

From Shinjuku the route runs east through Suidobashi, Ueno-hirokoji and Kanda to Nihombashi, then out to the Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa. It crosses to Ryogoku and Monzen-nakacho, comes back through Ginza, turns at Tamachi and returns past Hibiya to the finish by Tokyo Station.

This route has been used since 2017; before that the race finished at Tokyo Big Sight. On our map the line covers about 42.0 km with roughly 270 m of climbing.

What Tokyo is known for

The course is certified by World Athletics with its Platinum Label, and it shows several sides of the city in one run: the government towers of Shinjuku, the old gate at Asakusa and the shops of Ginza.

Running it

  • The course has several turning points, including at Tomioka Hachimangu and Tamachi: take the tight turns steadily.
  • Know the cut-off points: the organisers can stop runners who fall well behind race pace.
  • Plan your journey to Shinjuku for race morning in advance.

Frame your Tokyo finish

The Tokyo Marathon is available as a framed 3D map: the real terrain of the city printed in relief, with the course raised in colour. Add your name, date and finish time and we work out your pace. If you ran with a GPS watch, upload your GPX and we print your exact line.
