Mount Meru climb: the Momella route to Socialist Peak

Updated 8 November 2026

Mount Meru rises in the middle of Arusha National Park, about 60 km from Kilimanjaro. At 4,566 m it is Tanzania's second-highest mountain, and its summit, Socialist Peak, sits on the rim of a huge crater. The usual way up is the Momella route, a four-day climb with huts, and many people use it to acclimatise before Kilimanjaro.

Day by day

The Momella route is usually climbed in four days:

  • Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts: from about 1,500 m to about 2,515 m. An armed ranger walks with you on the lower slopes, where giraffe, zebra, buffalo and elephant are often seen. The longer southern path goes through the forest past Maio Falls and the Fig Tree Arch; our map follows the shorter, more direct trail.
  • Miriakamba to Saddle Huts: about 6 km and three to five hours, through forest into heath and giant heather, with views into the crater along the ridge. Saddle Huts are at about 3,570 m. An afternoon walk up Little Meru helps with acclimatisation.
  • Summit morning: leave around midnight and climb steeply to Rhino Point, then Cobra Point, before following a ridge of ash and rock along the crater rim to Socialist Peak. At sunrise you can see Kilimanjaro across the plains. Walk back down to Miriakamba the same day.
  • Last day: Miriakamba down through the forest to Momella Gate, two to four hours.

Terrain and how hard it is

Meru is about 1,300 m lower than Kilimanjaro, but it is still a very high mountain and should not be underestimated. The summit morning is steep, and acclimatisation is still the key to reaching the top.

In return, it is much quieter than Kilimanjaro, you sleep in wooden huts, and the lower slopes are full of wildlife. TANAPA asks climbers to acclimatise properly and follow the hut and ranger schedule.

On our map the Momella line from the gate to Socialist Peak covers about 16.9 km.

Best time of year

TANAPA names June to October and December to February as the peak seasons in Arusha National Park, and suggests booking early then. These match the dry seasons on Kilimanjaro next door.

The long rains, from late March to mid-June, are the wettest and least comfortable time to climb.

What to bring

  • A warm, waterproof jacket and warm layers for the summit morning.
  • A warm hat and gloves.
  • Hiking boots with good grip for the ash and rock on the ridge.
  • A warm sleeping bag for the huts.
  • A head torch with spare batteries.
  • Water, snacks, sun protection and insect repellent for the lower slopes.
  • Zip-top bags only for toiletries: Tanzania has a general ban on plastic bags.

Getting there, entry and fees

Arusha National Park is about 45 minutes from Arusha city and about an hour and a half from Moshi. The main park entrance is Ngongongare Gate near Usa River, and the climb starts at Momella Gate on the eastern side of the mountain. The trekking huts are Miriakamba and Saddle.

Climbs go with an armed ranger on the lower slopes, and TANAPA lists a ranger fee for mountain climbing. The Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) tariff for Arusha National Park lists, per adult: entrance TZS 127,750 for non-residents and TZS 63,875 for expatriate residents in the high-season band (16 May 2026 to 14 March 2027), and TZS 10,000 for East African citizens; hut fee TZS 76,650 for non-residents and expatriates and TZS 5,000 for East African citizens; rescue fee TZS 51,100 and TZS 2,000; ranger fee for mountain climbing TZS 38,325 and TZS 10,000.

All amounts are in Tanzanian shillings, valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and TANAPA says they include 18% VAT where it applies. Children aged 5 to 15 pay lower rates and children under 5 enter free. Conservation fees are valid for 24 hours from the time of entry. Keep the climb

We print the route on the real terrain, so the mountain rises off the wall in 3D with your line raised in colour. Add your names and summit date and it becomes the record of the climb. Meru's broken crater makes one of the most dramatic shapes we print.
