Sydney Marathon course guide: Harbour Bridge to the Opera House

Updated 8 November 2026

The Sydney Marathon runs from North Sydney across the Harbour Bridge to a finish in front of the Sydney Opera House. It grew out of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and ran as a World Marathon Major for the first time in 2025.

Sydney Marathon 2027: date, start, entry

The 2027 TCS Sydney Marathon is on Sunday 29 August 2027. It starts on Miller Street in North Sydney and finishes at the Sydney Opera House. The TCS Sydney Mini Marathon is a separate, shorter event in race week; in 2026 it was held the day before the marathon.

Places are given out by ballot, a random draw rather than first come, first served. The 2027 ballot ran from 29 September to 19 October 2026, and successful applicants were notified and charged on 3 November 2026. Duo teams and non-elite racing wheelchairs apply separately.

Entry fees for successful applicants: AUD 280 for domestic runners and AUD 330 for international runners. Charity places and travel packages that include guaranteed entry are also offered.

The course

The start on Miller Street celebrates the heritage of the Sydney 2000 Olympic marathon. Runners cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge early in the race, later run a loop of Centennial Park, and pass Mrs Macquarie's Chair in the Royal Botanic Garden before the finish at the Opera House.

This is not a flat course. On our map the line covers about 42.1 km with roughly 601 m of climbing, the most of the World Marathon Majors we print.

What Sydney is known for

The race began as a test event for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and is seen as one of the Games' legacies. It was held in mid-September for many years and moved to late August from 2025.

Running it

  • Run by effort on the climbs rather than trying to hold an even pace.
  • Use public transport to reach the start: the organisers warn of major road closures around the start line and along the course.
  • Enjoy the Harbour Bridge, but do not race it: it comes early and there is a long way to go.

Frame your Sydney finish

The Sydney Marathon is available as a framed 3D map: the real terrain of the city printed in relief, with the course raised in colour. Add your name, date and finish time and we work out your pace. If you ran with a GPS watch, upload your GPX and we print your exact line.
